Bern Helmets, made by Bern Unlimited, is a Massachusetts based sports company that specializes in helmets for non-motorized recreational activities, like skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, biking, etc. The company was founded by Dennis Leedom in July 2004.
Leedom had a self-revelation about the need for a single helmet style that could be used for a number of different sports. He looked around and saw consumers wearing different helmets for different sports. One for skiing, one for bike riding, one for skateboarding, and so on. He knew there was a better way and from this inspiration, Bern Unlimited was born.
After nearly a year and a half of research, design, and engineering the Bern helmet entered the market in late 2005 and gain almost overnight success with the help of Seth Wescott at the 2006 Olympic Games in Italy. Seth won Gold in snowboard cross while wearing a Bern helmet.
The company is dedicated to the world of action sports, giving back to the community, and protecting the environment. It is a company full of action sports enthusiast and take great pride in leading the way in advancing the awareness and technology of head protection.
Different Bern Helmet Categories
While Bern helmets are fairly versatile and can be used across a number of different sports, Bern Unlimited does categorize their helmets into four different styles: Bike, Snow, Skate, and h2o (water). The main difference is with the snow and h2o helmets that have additional padding and ear protection, in the case of the snow helmets, and specialized padding and neoprene to prevent the padding from getting waterlogged, in the h2o helmets.
Unfortunately, in the h2o helmets, the specialized padding does not allow the helmet to meet the safety standard for action sports head protection.
Additional features in the snow helmets include drop in audio chip earflaps, removable liners that allow you to convert the helmet to a summer helmet, and the revolutionary Zipmold Technology that allows for a higher strength to weight ratio of the hard outer shell.
