There a few different names for these types of helmets. Motocross helmets, dirt bike helmets, or off-road helmets. No matter what you call them, these helmets serve a very specific purpose and have certain features built into them to accommodate those purposes.
Motorcross and dirt bike racing are very strenuous and grueling sports. The riders must endure a very strenuous and physically demanding atmosphere while maintaining focus and poise in order to complete the race.
Specific Features of Dirt Bike Helmets
Probably the most prominent feature of a these helmet, one that sets it apart for other helmets, including other full face helmets, is the extended visor. This visor not only helps reduce sun glare in outdoor racing, but also, and more importantly, deflects roost kicked up by other riders.
Another feature is a larger eye port to accommodate goggles, which are absolutely necessary for keeping dirt and other debris out of the rider’s eyes.
Finally, the extended chin bar, which is much more elongated that the chin guard you would find on a regular full face helmet. The unique design allows for more space inside the helmet around the face area. This results in better air flow and a more comfortable experience.
DOT, Snell, and ECE Dirt Bike Helmets
Much like their motorcycle helmet counterparts, dirt bike helmets can meet the safety standards established by DOT, Snell, and ECE. Note, not all helmets that are available on the market meet the minimal standards set by these organizations. So make sure the helmet you choose meets the minimal standards of DOT or ECE.
Also, just because a helmet is DOT approved, but is not Snell certified, it does not mean that a Snell helmet is a better for you. Either helmet ought to provide the protection that you need in crash, the better helmet for you is the one that fits best and is most comfortable. A helmet that does not fit well, or that is uncomfortable, will either be worn incorrectly or not worn at all.
