Ever want to experience what it is like to scale the side of a cliff. This helmet cam video gives you a taste if the thrilling climb in a 30 min ride. This is some pretty intense crack climbing and includes a fall (around 27:20, if you want to skip ahead). The fall is pretty hairy. The climber is laying back off what looks like a pretty thin corner while his feet are smearing what seems like a pretty flat wall. He manages to reach the top, shaky and tense from the exposure, grabs the chains, but…….you gotta watch it.

The rating of this climb, the Grand Wall in Squamish, BC, is 5.11a, A0. This is a multi pitch climb and two of the pitches are featured in this footage. The first is the Split Pillar pitch and the second, starting at 17.55, is The Sword pitch.

Big wall climbing. Helmet? You bet. There are so many reasons to wear a helmet when big wall climbing. Falling rocks, equipment, and debris are common especially on popular climbs. Any head injury is serious, but getting one on a multi pitch climb can be down right deadly. Wearing a rock climbing helmet is such a simple thing and the helmets on the market these days are fantastic. Don’t risk more than necessary.
