Nutcase Helmets is a Portland Oregon based helmet manufacturer and supplier and has some of the most creative and expressive bicycle and scooter/motorcycle helmets. Of all the helmets we promote here at Meloncase, Nutcase helmets are definitely the most fun and represent the uniqueness and local flavor that is Portland.
Nutcase’s goal is to make helmets fun again. They wanted to get away from the typical aerodynamic or cartoon character based bike helmets that you find in every department or sporting goods store. In my opinion, they have accomplished that goal.
Their helmets can be worn by kids and adults alike. Kids aren’t the only ones that want to wear fun and wacky stuff, though I must admit, the kids helmets are a great way to get kids more accepting of wearing a helmet in the first place. If you make it fun they get into it a bit easier.
Nutcase’s helmet lineup consists of adult bike helmets, kids bike helmets (Little Nuttys), baby helmets (Baby Nuttys), Metroride helmets (a little classier than the bike helmets with a snap in visor, great for commuting), skate helmets, motorcycle/scooter helmets, snow helmets, and water helmets. They also have a full line of matching bells and other accessories.
Lets go into a bit more detail on each of these different helmets
Nutcase Baby Nutty Helmets
Do you have a little one that isn’t quite up to riding a pedal bike yet? Maybe they are on a scoot bike or ride around in the cargo box or baby seat on mom or dad’s bike. The Baby Nutty is just the helmet for the littlest of bike enthusiasts. Earlier riders are apt to take a tumble here or there. These helmets will protect them where it matters most.
Here are a few that you can buy on Amazon with free shipping.
Nutcase Helmets – Little Nutty
The next step up is the Little Nutty lineup. Nutcase currently has 16 different designs, some classics and some new for 2016. One of the best features of Nutcase helmet is the magnetic buckle that can be clipped and un-clipped with one hand. I know first hand how painful a little pinch of the skin from the chin strap clip on your child can be. The magnetic buckle eliminates the potential for pinched skin, which is awesome.
The Little Nutty come in one size with a spin dial adjustment for the perfect fit and comfort. According to Nutcase, the helmet tends to fit kids base from about age 2 to age 6 or 7. It is wise to measure your child’s head and compare it to their sizing charts before ordering.
Here are some of my favorite Little Nutty designs:
Nutcase Street Helmets
Nutcase Helmets’ Street is their biggest lineup of helmets with 32 designs in 2016, again some classic some new (12 new styles for 2016). These helmet are great for any street activity including bike riding, skateboarding, scootering, rollerblading/skating, roller derby, etc. They come with a removable visor, magnetic buckle, and spin dial for the perfect fit.
Here are some of the new styles to chose from. Love these helmets:
Nutcase Helmets – Metroride
The Metroride helmet is a spin on the street helmet and is marketed as a “commuter” helmet. A helmet that you could wear when bike commuting to work in your suit, if that is something you do, commute to work in your suit. The design is a bit more classy with matte colors, more prominent removable visor (this visor is bit different than the visor in the street helmets), and larger ventilation holes in front. The helmet also feature the spin dial adjustment and magnetic buckle.
Here are some of the Metroride helmet available this year:
Nutcase Helmets – Moto
Nutcase discontinued their motorcycle helmets for a while, but they are back again. These are open face helmets with a removable, pivoting, anti-scratch shield, ratcheting, quick-release buckle, and two front intake ventilation holes.
All of Nutcase Helmets’ Moto helmets are DOT/ECE dual-certified so you can be sure your head is protected in the event of a crash. Currently, there are 8 different designs to chose from:
Nutcase Snow and Water Helmets
At this time, it appears that Nutcase is closing out their Snow and Water Helmet lineup. Their snow helmets feature 3 sizes of fleece liners that cover the ears, magnetic buckles, and a goggle strap holder. The helmets comply with the ASTM F2040 snow helmet safety standards.
Their water helmets feature waterproof, neoprene, removable ear pads, 360 degree reflectivity, a magnetic buckle, and comply with CE EN-1385 water sports safety standards.
You can also find them occasionally on Amazon:
Nutcase Helmets and Safety Standards
All Nutcase Helmets meet the appropriate safety standards in the countries where they are sold, be it the United States, the European Union, Australia, or New Zealand. Their older, Gen2 helmets received a poor rating by Consumer Reports back in 2012 even though they passed all certification standards that year.
Since then, the helmet have been improved in both design and functionality. They continue to meet all safety standards and even received a distinction of “best helmet in impact protection” from the German consumer reporting magazine, Stiftung Warentest.
