This video still amazes me. I can watch it time and again and still be shocked. I am not sure what exactly is happening prior to this video, but there is a progression of police officers coming down the street. The lead officer gets taken a bit by surprise….

You would think that the officer would know where he is and see the curb in front of him. He doesn’t see a curb in his path and hits it at a pretty good speed. As the motorcycle jumps the curb, the back end is launched into the air temporarily balancing the entire bike on the front wheel.

The front wheel collapses under the weight and momentum of the bike and it falls forward with the rider just barely missing getting crushed. Both the bike and the rider go tumbling down the street as the line of motorcycle behind him slow down.

The rider tumbles along the street hitting his head a few times. When you watch the slow motion version, you can see one last tumble and the riders head is whipped around and smashes into the pavement. Luckily he is wearing a motorcycle helmet and is able to partially sit up after coming to a stop.

There is no doubt that this officer would have been severely injured or killed had he not been wearing his helmet. The final blow to the side of the helmet would have been a devastating blow to his skull.

This is the exact reason why you wear a motorcycle helmet. These officers weren’t going too fast. They were in some sort of procession, in a “controlled” environment, evident by the lack of other traffic and the officers that came onto the street after the crash. There was no apparent danger or precarious situation.

Accidents like this can just happen. Totally out of the blue. No other vehicles. No high speed maneuvering. No real threats. Just a curb, a bump in the road. One little oversight.

Be cautious. Wear a motorcycle helmet. You never know when it will save your life.
